  4.     Until last week it seemed nothing short of a miracle would
  5. enable a Democrat to win a state senate seat from San Diego's
  6. heavily Republican 39th District. But that was before Roman
  7. Catholic Bishop Leo Maher ordered that Democratic candidate
  8. Lucy Killea, 67, be refused Communion because of her pro-choice
  9. views on abortion. Though Maher declared that his action was
  10. "more pastoral than political," it quickly became the most
  11. important issue in the campaign. Riled by the bishop's
  12. intervention, voters gave Killea a 51%-to-49% upset victory over
  13. state legislator Carol Bentley in a special election.

  16. Abortion Rights Action League: "The bishop shot himself in the
  17. foot."
